Overview

The historic town, Jimena de la Frontera, is a municipality situated in the Cadiz province in Spain. The National Statistical Institute in Spain has assessed the population of this city in 2006 as 9893. This population has a large number of British people (Ex-pats) who have chosen this place as their permanent residence.
The transportation to this city can either be by road or by rail. The railway station is on the outskirts of this town. A number of trains between Granada and Algeciras stop in this city station.
The distance between Jimena and san Roque by road is 35 KM. This town is at a height of 200 M above sea level. The Natural Park Los Alcornocales surrounds this town. The town’s entrance has three arches and this has been declared in 1983 as a place of artistic and historical importance. Care has been taken to preserve this Andalusian architecture.

History
Over a period of time Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Iberians and Romans were the inhabitants of this place. They made use of the rich mineral deposits for their advantage. Since this town was located on a hill, Moors took advantage of this and used it as a strategically important military position. Moors also made this town commercially important in the year 750 AD.
This town was repeatedly conquered/ re-conquered over a number of centuries. In the year 1879, Alfonso XII gave the title Cuidad meaning town. In spite of this, the town has still retained its village ambience because of the low population, whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets.

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

Maximum – 26 °C in the month of July-August
Minimum – 12 °C in December to February

Art and Culture

Moors constructed a castle in the year 750 AD to make this town strategically important. Many believe that this castle has been constructed on the Roman ruins. Local limestone was used for this construction.

Cuisine
The cuisine in this place is mainly dependent on the natural ingredients that are available either in the nearby forest or produce grown locally.
Popular items are as follows:
Revuelto de esparragos – is asparagus mixed in scrambled egg.
Chantarella – is one of the types of wild mushroom.
Piñonate – is a sweet of Arabic origin; its recipe includes almonds, honey, olive oil, orange peel and cinnamon.

1.Carnival – in the month of February.
2.Agricultural Fair - in May second week.
3.Annual Village Fair – in August 2nd week.
4.Reina de los Angeles – Devotion in September 1st week.
5.Annual Music Festival – in July 2nd week where Jazz, Classic, Flamenco, Ethnic and Celtic music is played.
