Overview
The city of Jerez de la Frontera is located in the Cadiz province in the Andalusia autonomous community in Spain and it is equidistant from the sea and mountain. This is a municipality with a population of about 206,000 in 2008. It is an important hub for communications and transport. The land here is fertile and well suited for agriculture. It is famous for its horse breeding and cattle ranches.
The origin for the name Jerez is Arabic and this sounds more or less like ‘sherry’. It is highly popular for the production of brandy and sherry. In addition, it is famous for the Flamenco music as well as dance. It is highly popular for its horses.

History
Jerez has been in existence even during Phoenician times; however it became popular only under the rule of Moors. Moors called this as Sherrich or Xerix ‘De La Frontera’. The development of this city was accelerated by the Moslems during the periods of Almohade or Almoravide; the town underwent a major extension because of the palaces and mosques built in this period.

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

Maximum – 33 °C in the month of July-August
Minimum – 5.4 °C in January

Art and Culture
1.San Salvador Cathedral – was built in the 18th century wherein a 14th century Christ’s figure and the painting of Zurbaran – The Sleeping Girl – are kept.
2.Arab Baths – were built in the period when this city was a part of the Cordoba Caliphate.
3.Flamenco Music and Art – contains a musical instruments collection that covers the flamenco history and it was built in the 18th century.
4.Zoological Park – has a zoo, park and botanical gardens.
5.Alcazaba or Moorish fortress – belongs to the 11th century and has been restored partially.
6.Clock Museum – contains more than three hundred clocks that belong to 16th to 19th century; this museum also has a number of peacocks.

Sports and Entertainment
The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art has good stallions whose performances are worth watching. In this school practical training is available for training horsemen and horses in coach driving, harness manufacture, blacksmithing.

Some of the popular sports in this city are – Football, Athletics, Basketball, Motorcycle and Car racing.

Shopping
This is the one of the important cities for trading ancient crafts and traditional products. Items of interest are – wicker work, barrel making and items related to saddling, flamenco and wine. Many companies and boutiques deal in these products.

Business
During the 19th century this city gained economic prosperity when it partnered the wine merchants and English exporters that led to the popular sherry industry in this city.
