The cathedral is located in the centre of Barcelona on Monte Tabor; the highest point in the area known as Barri Gotic. The construction of this cathedral dates back to the year 1298 with completion in the year 1448. However the main facade was added in the year 1898 and the final addition of the dome to this magnificent structure was made in 1913.

Attractions of the Cathedral Complex

The Gothic architectural beauty clearly visible on the outside with its arches, towers and spirals also extends to the inner walls and the other areas of the cathedral complex as follows:

The Cathedral Interior consists of three aisles, one main centre aisle and two side aisles. The stained windows and the chapels with ornate altars located on the sides and the choir loft in the centre aisle are just a few of the attractions within the cathedral.

The Cathedral Cloister is an oasis of palm trees and magnolias; a number of chapels with altars dedicated to various saints are located in this area. There is also a fountain adorned with a small statue of St. George and it is customary on Corpus Christi to blow an egg and have it spin on the fountain. Perhaps the most uncommon but beautiful site would be the white geese which occupy the cloister.

The Crypt which can be found below the high altar of the main chapel or the Capilla Major as it is commonly called contains the tomb of Saint Eulalia, patroness to the city and the cathedral. The sarcophagus is truly an impressive sight to behold.

The architecture displayed on the Casa De L’Ardiaca or the Archdeacon’s House is definitely worth seeing and The Institut Municipal D’historia which is also located in the Archdeacon’s House is a combination of Gothic and Italian architecture, a direct result of work being done between the 12th and 15th century. Whilst The Institut Municipal D’historia is not open to the general public, the courtyard with its coloured tiles and fountain remains a popular attraction.

The Cathedral Tower can be accessed via a staircase (210 steps) or an elevator but once at the top, the view is absolutely breathtaking.

There are many more areas to be visited and explored within the Barcelona Cathedral complex such as the museum, the treasury and the palaces of which the Casa De L’Ardiaca is one of the three located within the complex. The Cathedral is open on a daily basis and guided tours are also available at specific times throughout the day.
