Avila
Avila, a city in Asturias, the highest provincial capital of Spain is situated 3665 feet above sea level. During the 5th Century Vettones occupied this place and called it Obila meaning ‘High Mountain’. Avila is most popular for its fortification of city walls, with eighty eight towers and nine gateways which is one of the seven wonders of Spain. A look at the magnificent wall makes one wonder about its astounding infrastructure and construction with brown granite. These towers and mountains guard Avila like a faithful monster. This monument has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Gothic Cathedral of Avila is considered to be the first Gothic monument in Spain, origin of which is exactly not known. This church has certain resemblance to the first Gothic church and also carries some French influence. It appears like a mighty fortress with two solid towers. It is the home of many interesting sculptures and paintings of the past. You can spend the entire day by walking along the walls of the city, exploring archways and towers that once protected Avila. Santa Teresa is Avila’s saint and her finger along with ring is said to be preserved at Convento de Santa Teresa.
Segovia
Segovia is situated north of Madrid; its altitude varies from 750 meters to 2,430 meters. Climate here is Mediterranean, dry and cold, due to its altitude and distance from the coast. In December, temperature falls below -14 degrees Celsius, making it unbearable. Segovia Cathedral was built during the 15th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The structure encompasses three tall tombs, which rise to 33 meters height. The original spire built of mahogany which resembled the structure of pyramid was destroyed by thunderstorm, and in 1614 new stone spire was erected. Other important places in Segovia are San Martin Church, San Justo Church, old Synagogue and many more. Alcazar of Segovia is one of the castle palaces in Spain. Alcazar was originally built as a fortress but served as prison, Artillery College and military academy earlier. This structure is said to have inspired the castle in Disney’s sleeping beauty. Segovia’s aqueduct was built 2000 years ago and still stands there sustaining its infrastructure and dignity.
Soria
Soria, a city along the river Duero, is located in the north-central part of Spain. At the time of Roman invasion, the entire population of Soria committed suicide showing their rebellion against slavery. The city has faced ups and downs in the past to maintain its dignity. Soria was captured and set on fire by French troops during the 18th century. Spanish civil war left a huge impact on this city leaving the city fully evacuated. Most of the monuments in this city have rich heritage of the past. Main Square of Town hall is distinctive among them.
