The beautiful Canary Islands are situated towards the African northwest coast. Canary Islands are known for its beautiful beaches, balmy climate, vivid topography and picturesque scenery. But only few visitors know about six steps pyramids that can be cited at the town of Guimar.

Pirámides de Güímar is an Ethnographic Park which is located inside the Güímar town, about 26 kms distance from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. For reaching this park you need to travel by road from the north of Tenerife and then travel southwards on TF-1 motorway. You need to move towards Playa de las Américas. After taking the Arafo exit which is at 19-km point, you'll need to travel north wards until you reach Puertito de Güímar. This site alone measures around 60.000 m², around €6 million have been invested on this site making it a must see destination for both Spanish and tourists.

A famous Norway Explorer, Heyerdahl, who was also a writer by profession, had drawn the world's attention towards these pyramids in early 1990s. Heyerdahl started residing in Tenerife from the year 1994 and from then on he dedicated his entire life on studying these pyramids until he expired in the year 2002. After Heyerdahl discovery of the pyramids, the Institute of astrophysics, Canary Islands investigated about its astronomy connections and found them to be quite potent. Institute of astrophysics suggested that the Guimar pyramids were lined according to the weather changes, especially how summer and winter solstices.

The archaeological department started excavating the site and excavations continued from 1997 to 1998 and what was revealed beneath one of the pyramids was a cave that was 26 feet long and also contained human remains which dated to pre-Hispanic times. The remains were of the indigeneous people known as the Gaunches.

According To Heyerdahl, these pyramids have been built by the same procedure in which pyramids of Mesopotamia, Peru and Mexico have been constructed by pre-European voyagers. But this topic of pyramids construction is still under debate. Heyerdahl was helped by his friend Fred Olsen who bought the site in 1998 and also founded a museum so that we can understand Heyerdhal discoveries and get to know about the Guimar’s Pyramids.

The park is open daily between 9:30 AM to 6 PM. A bus service is provided by the park with a pick up points from the island. Basic amenities like baby changing room, toilets, disabled toilet, wheelchair, customer service, lost property office, meeting point, cafeteria, information center and meeting points can easily be found here.
